Breaking News: Biden Withdraws from 2024 Election Race
Democrats' Pressure Forces Biden's Exit
37 Congressional Democrats, Including Manchin, Call for Biden to End Candidacy
Amidst growing pressure from within his own party, President Joe Biden has announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race. Thirty-seven congressional Democrats, including independent Senator Joe Manchin, had previously called on Biden to end his reelection bid.
Biden's decision clears the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to become the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination. Her campaign has already received endorsements from several prominent Democrats, including Senator Elizabeth Warren and former President Barack Obama.
Biden's withdrawal marks a significant shift in the campaign for the White House. The president had previously indicated that he intended to run for reelection, but mounting pressure from fellow Democrats forced him to reconsider.
In a statement, Biden said that he had "heard the concerns of my fellow Democrats and the American people." He added that he believed that "it is in the best interests of the country for me to step aside."
